Although the Arabs and Muslims were subject to Koranic laws that prohibit the use of alcohol, grape cultivation continued and even improved during the period of Muslim domination. Several emirs and caliphs owned vineyards and drank wine and even had written laws that outlawed the sale of wine dynasties more liberal Christians allowed to continue cultivating their vineyards and wine making, especially in the monasteries.
With the Reconquista became open to the possibility of export of Spanish wine. Bilbao emerged as a major trading port, through which introduced Spanish wines in the markets of England Bristol, London and Southampton. The quality of some of these wines exported seems to have been high. In 1364, the court of Edward III established the maximum price of wine sold in England, with Spanish wines, valued at the same level as the wines of Gascony and higher than those of La Rochelle.
